Other uses for natural stone

Although the majority of our clients come in with either kitchen countertops or vanity tops, there are many more uses for natural stone than immediately come to mind. We have compiled a few examples of other projects we have done out of stone.

This client used Indonesian marble to wrap column bases throughout their beautiful custom home. They also used matching 24″x24″ marble tile on the floor.

For this mountain cabin in Shaver Lake, California, our clients chose Golden Crystal granite and we used it to wrap their fireplace. By doing so, we turned an otherwise unexciting fireplace into a beautiful focal piece in the room.

This antique piece was purchased at a garage sale by a client. For $300, we were able to find a gorgeous remnant of Red Dragon granite to cover the table. We were able to perfectly match and cut the shape of the table top using our CNC machine.

This client used Juparana Columbo granite to cover the tub deck in their master bathroom. We fabricated and installed the face pieces in strips to give the illusion of curved stone. It turned out fabulous and the clients could not have been happier.

Natural Stone—Beautiful, Durable & Sustainable!

The Green Building movement has become a popular topic of interest over the last couple years, as more and more people are becoming aware of the need to help sustain the environment.

Natural stone has been used for building for centuries because of its durability and beauty, but its sustainable properties will allow it to progress in the building industry for centuries to come.

While there are many misconceptions about stone and sustainability out there, theMIA, Marble Institute of America, is working hard to help over come them. They recently produced a Sustainability video to help educate architects, designers, contractors, and consumers on how natural stone is the natural choice when it comes to sustainable building products. I hope you take some time to watch it and learn more on the subject.

Kitchen Countertops: How to Clean Granite

by Jen Jafarzadeh L’Italien, Posted Feb 22nd 2011 3:00PM

Filed Under: Kitchen & BathSmall ProjectsProducts & Materials

Unless you’ve been hiding under a rock (pun intended), you know that granite countertops are one of the most popular luxe upgrades for a home.

And what’s not to love? Granite is one of the hardest of types countertop stones and is remarkably resistant to scratches and heat. The minerals in granite are also resistant to almost all chemicals commonly found in the home.

Still, stains happen, especially in the kitchen. So we consulted with the Marble Institute of America to find out how to tackle some of the trickiest stains — and what you should know about resealing granite countertops so they stay as good as new.

How to remove oil stains: As with any stain, it’s recommended to clean up the spill as soon as possible. Oil-based stains include everything from cooking oil to milk. An oil stain can darken the stone so it must be chemically dissolved so the stain can rinse away. Clean the surface gently with a household detergent orammonia or mineral spirits. A poultice of baking soda and water is an eco-friendly solution that often works on oil-based stains.

How to remove organic stains (think coffee and tea): Fruit, coffee, tea, food, and paper can cause a pinkish-brownish stain on the stone, which may disappear after the source of the stain is removed. It’s recommended to use a solution of hydrogen peroxide and a few drops of ammonia to remove the stain.

What to know about sealing granite
Sealing granite countertops ensures a further resistance to moisture migration into an already moisture-resistant surface. In fact, before 1995, there were very few quality sealers on the market, yet there were still few cases of staining. Once properly sealed, the granite is more resistant to everyday dirt and spills. Sealers have a lifespan of about 10 to 15 years. In today’s market, most granite automatically receives a resin treatment at the factory, so you don’t have to worry about sealing your granite countertop.
